Hausa Community in Plateau State Suffers Yet Another Calamity

At least 35 people have been killed and scores of others gone missing in flooding caused by heavy rains in Plateau State. Those affected are the Hausa Communities living beside the Dilimi River namely; Rikos, Gangare and others.

PressTV quoted the local spokesman for Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), one Alhaji Faruk Umar who confirmed that over 30 bodies has been recovered and that “….many others are still missing

According to Dr. Aliyu Tilde who spoke with one of the Hausa Community Leader in Jos, they are hundreds of stranded families living in the open without shelter or provisions, some of them grieving the lost of a beloved one.

Of course and as expected they have not been any response from the State Government. Giving an on spot assessment Dr. Aliyu Tilde Stated

“So far there has not been any response from the state government. It will take a day or two or even more before relief would start reaching the victims from relief agencies. NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) will certainly channel its aid through the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). Experience of communities in the state, particularly Hausa and Fulani communities, teaches that relief from SEMA often comes staled, if it comes at all, as it rarely does. The experience of Jos IDPs in 2008 crisis is still fresh in our minds.”

These communities cannot be left in the hands of a State Government headed by a man it accused of trying to annihilate it, an allegation which evidences are gradually proving to be true. We cannot also leave them in the hands of a clueless, purposeless and visionless federal leadership.

We use this opportunity to call on well meaning Nigerians and others to exert pressure on the Plateau State and Federal Government to come to the aid of the displaced.

This is the blessed Month of Ramadan, we pray Allah come to the aid of the displaced persons and may He (SWT) accept the Souls of the departed believers.

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: “Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.” Qur’an 2:155-156
