Ghana’s President John Atta Mills has died, according to a statement signed by the Ghana Chief of Staff, Mr John Newman earlier today (24/07/12).
- “It is with a heavy heart…that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana,” Reuters quoted the statement as saying.
It said the president, 68, died a few hours after being taken ill at the 37 Military Hospital, Accra. The course of death is still not clear.
Parliament of Ghana is to call an emergency meeting at 6pm, Ghana time, to swear in Vice President John Dramani Mahama as President.
ABUJA The Nigeria House of Representatives through its spokesman, Hon Zakari Muhammad, has described the late John Atta Mills as a an embodiment of humility and a honest and transparent leader whose wit and wise counsels on the development of the region would be greatly missed.
President Goodluck Jonathan has also extended condolence to the People of Ghana for the lost and hoping that the “excellent” relationship existing between the two countries (Nigeria and Ghana) will continue to grow stronger.
